The Mamma Mia! musical first sounded the bells at the Prince Edward Theatre in 1999 before ultimately transferring to the Novello Theatre, where it still performs to this day as West End’s 6th longest-running franchise. Its original series of shows was a critical success, clinching a Laurence Olivier Award for Best Performance in a Supporting Role and a GRAMMY Award nomination for Best Musical Theater Album.
“Treat yourself to a night of fun, dancing, and sheer joy.” – Broadway World
“One of those nights when you sit back and let a nutty kind of joy just sweep over you.” – New York Post
In 2001, the production skipped and sang its way to the Winter Garden Theatre for its official Broadway debut, following initial engagements in Toronto, San Francisco, Los Angeles, and Chicago. It was similarly acclaimed as its London counterpart, receiving three nominations from the Drama Desk Awards and five from the Tony Awards, including one for Best Musical. After relocating to the Broadhurst Theatre for the rest of its stint, Mamma Mia! would later become the longest-running jukebox musical in Broadway history at the end of nearly 5,800 box-office-breaking performances.
Since then, the production has proliferated in each continent (barring Antarctica, mind you!), establishing a foothold in over FIFTY countries. It has been experienced in at least SIXTEEN languages by more than 65 MILLION people and has grossed $4 BILLION across all its stage adaptations. Mamma Mia! was also delivered to the silver screen in 2008, featuring an ensemble cast led by Meryl Streep, Amanda Seyfried, and Colin Firth. A multi-awarded smash hit, it spawned a critically acclaimed sequel titled “Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again” in 2018, with much of the cast reprising their roles.
