Ranked today as the third of Broadway’s longest-running musicals of all time, Disney’s The Lion King has cemented its position in global history with numerous tours that have reached not just several cities in the United States, but also Canada, South America, and Europe among others. On May, it adds another to its list of productions as The Lion King will be arriving in Music Hall Kansas City at Kansas City on Thursday 29th May 2025!
The renowned musical, since its creation and move to the Broadway stage in 1997, has changed the landscape of Broadway and theater entirely. With a beloved story adapted beautifully to theater with the unique introduction of life-sized animal puppets and an African-inspired musical score and choreography, the musical was considered an incredible shock to both supporters of the previous movie and completely new audiences.
In addition to a show with a strong plot, The Lion King is also certainly one of the most applauded shows in every single award season the musical was included in. In 1998 alone after its premiere, the musical was nominated for over 20 awards, winning 6 Tony awards at the time which includes Best Musical, Best Scenic Design (by Richard Hudson), Best Choreography (by Garth Fagan), Best Lighting Design (by Donald Holder), Best Direction of a Musical and Best Costume Design (by Julie Taymor). The award given for Best Direction of a Musical is considered historical, as Julie Taymor is the first woman to ever receive the award.
Still standing tall, the Broadway hit resumed to prove its standing and timelessness with more than over 70 major arts awards and nominations conferred. In its multiple tours and performances all over the world, it has been presented awards by a lot of bodies which includes the NY Drama Critics Circle, The Grammys, the Laurence Olivier Awards, the Molière Awards, and the Helpmann Awards.
Witness life in the African savanna as the musical takes you on a ride back to The Pride Lands and performs for you the classic chronicle of Simba and the lion cub's life. The Lion King will only be performing in Music Hall Kansas City for a limited time; tickets for this Thursday 29th May 2025 showing can now be purchased by clicking on the links above.
