The saga of Disney’s The Lion King starts in a fictional land in Africa; set in The Pride Lands, the young lion Simba is destined to succeed as King, before betrayal occurs because of the actions of his jealous uncle Scar and his impulse to overthrow Simba's father, Mufasa, and become ruler himself. The first part's sequence of occurrences leads to the little lion's banishment from his home and the account of his ultimate journey back to retake his throne and his place as King.
The musical, since its formation, had to maintain accuracy using real-life sources from real African society and historical texts given the play's setting. The story itself is actually taken from real African warriors and factual happenings – Simba as an example is the animal counterpart of Sundiata Mansa, the leader of the Imperial Mali who was justly referred to The Lion of Mali.
Julie Taymor, the first female director in Broadway history to earn a Tony Award for Best Direction of a Musical, paid due homage to the original film as source material, specifically with outfits used, which resulted in a precise staging of The Lion King. The outfits when seen are gracious depictions of several indigenous people in Africa, an exemplification of which is Simba’s costume in the show which in fact inspired by Kenyan Maasi warriors' outfits. Just like the late 1994 film, the remarkable musical compositions written by Elton John and Tim Rice pays homage to its African inspiration, with the stage adaptation even adding numbers with lyrics that are performed either partially or entirely in African tongue including Swahili and Zulu. Moreover, the African inspiration is also noticeable in choreography, with several of the dances consistently featuring the grace of Bali-inspired choreography.
The 3D puppetry, song composition, and lifelike stage design all work in harmony to deliver an awe-inspiring musical.
